A houseboat in India usually means one of two very different stays: a cruising Kerala boat that drifts through the Alleppey backwaters with a cook on board, or a carved wooden houseboat that stays moored on Srinagar's Dal or Nigeen lake while a shikara ferries you to shore. Both are lovely, both have downsides nobody puts in the brochure, and picking the wrong one for your group is the most common mistake we see.
This site covers all of it plainly: which stay fits a family or a couple, what really happens hour by hour, which questions to ask before you pay, and smaller places such as Tarkarli, Tehri, Goa and the Sundarbans. Start with the comparison below, then follow the tables to the page you need.

Which houseboat stay suits your trip
Before looking at boats, decide what kind of time you want on the water. A Kerala stay is a slow journey with meals; a Kashmir stay is a heritage room on a lake with Srinagar at your doorstep. The other places are shorter, simpler experiences that work best as part of a wider holiday.
| Stay | Does it move? | Feels like | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alleppey and Kerala backwaters | Yes, by day only | A private floating cottage with a crew of two or three | Families, couples, groups who want to switch off for a night |
| Dal and Nigeen lakes, Srinagar | No, moored all year | A carved wooden guesthouse on stilts and a pontoon | Sightseeing trips to Kashmir, longer stays, slow mornings |
| Tarkarli, Goa | Short river cruises | A Kerala style boat on a coastal creek | A beach holiday with one night on the water |
| Tehri Lake | Floating huts, boat rides | A lakeside room in the Garhwal hills | Road trips in Uttarakhand |
| Sundarbans | Yes, with forest permits | A basic river boat on a wildlife trip | Nature lovers who accept simple cabins |
If you are unsure, our page on what a houseboat actually is explains the difference between a cruising boat and a moored one in more detail.
Plan your dates and group in two minutes
Group size and month decide more than anything else: how many bedrooms you need, whether a day cruise is enough, and whether rain or cold will shape the trip. So use the trip planner above; feed it your head count and travel month and it proposes a boat size, a cruise type, a sample timeline and a packing list you can adjust.

Kerala backwaters beyond Alleppey
The same kind of boat runs from several other bases, each with its own character. Our Kerala houseboat hub compares them in depth; this table is the short version.
| Page | What makes it different |
|---|---|
| Kumarakom | Wide open Vembanad lake, calmer jetties, a bird sanctuary on the shore |
| Kollam and Ashtamudi | A many armed lake in the south and the long canal route to Alleppey |
| Kochi | Short cruises and island villages close to the airport |
| Nileshwar and Bekal | Quiet north Kerala water with very few boats |
| Munnar and Thekkady | The honest answer for hill station travellers |
| The kettuvallam | How the old rice barge became today's houseboat |

Kashmir: a houseboat on Dal and Nigeen lakes
Srinagar's houseboats are permanently moored along the edges of Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake and the Jhelum. You reach them by shikara, the small canopied rowing boat, and the boat itself is the attraction: walnut and cedar panelling, khatamband ceilings made of fitted wooden pieces, papier mache lamps and thick rugs. Nights from late autumn through winter are very cold, so heating matters more than any view.

A houseboat on a lake or river elsewhere in India
Away from Kerala and Kashmir the choice is small, and that is fine as long as you know what you are getting. These are usually one night or a few hours on the water within a bigger trip.
- Tarkarli: Kerala style boats on the Karli river backwaters near Malvan in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, often paired with a beach stay.
- Tehri Lake: floating huts and boats on the dam lake in Uttarakhand, more a lake resort than a cruise.
- Goa: a handful of Kerala style boats on the northern rivers, mostly overnight trips with dinner.
- Sundarbans: overnight river boats on mangrove trips in West Bengal, which need forest permits arranged in advance.
If someone offers a floating houseboat on a small city lake, ask whether it ever leaves the jetty and whether it is licensed for overnight guests. Some are restaurants or party boats that only look like houseboats.
Houseboat basics, meanings and school projects
Plenty of readers are not booking at all. Students need ten simple lines, artists want to sketch one, and people searching what the word means in Hindi land here too. These pages are written for them.

Bamboo, coir and carved cedar: how each houseboat is made
A Kerala boat grew out of the kettuvallam, a cargo barge built from anjili (wild jack) wood planks tied with coir rope and coated with cashew nut shell oil. The rounded roof is a frame of bamboo covered with woven palm or coir matting, which is why people search for a bamboo houseboat. Modern boats keep that shape outside and add tiled bathrooms, sofas and glass windows inside.
Kashmir boats are a different craft altogether: long, flat hulls of cedar (deodar) with a house built on top, richly carved verandas, walnut furniture and ceilings in the khatamband style. Decoration there means woodwork, crewel curtains and papier mache; in Kerala it means bamboo, cane, coir mats and, on some boats, flowers arranged on the bed for a honeymoon.

How to pick the best houseboat for your group
There is no single best houseboat in India; there is the best one for your dates, group and budget. Work through these steps in order.
- Choose the experience: cruising Kerala water, a moored Kashmir boat, or a short trip elsewhere.
- Count beds honestly: one bedroom per couple, and ask whether extra mattresses are allowed for children.
- Pick private or sharing: private for families and couples, sharing only if you are happy with strangers at meals.
- Ask about cooling or heating: in Kerala, which hours the AC runs; in Kashmir, what heats the rooms at night.
- Check registration: Kerala boats should hold a Port Department licence and many carry a tourism department classification, listed on the Kerala Tourism website. In Srinagar, ask for the tourism department category.
- Get it in writing: times, meals, route, what costs extra, and the cancellation terms.
Honest downsides and what fixes them
| Problem | Where | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Mosquitoes after dark | Kerala, Sundarbans | Long sleeves, repellent, ask for nets or a closed room before dusk |
| Afternoon heat | Kerala, March to May | Sit on the shaded deck, carry a hat, ask whether AC can run in the afternoon |
| Generator hum at night | Older Kerala boats | Sleep in the cabin furthest from the generator room, and ask whether the boat plugs into shore power once moored |
| Touts at the jetty | Alleppey, Srinagar | Book ahead with a written quote and meet the boat crew directly |
| Freezing nights | Kashmir, late autumn to winter | Confirm heaters or a heated blanket, pack thermals |
| Crowded stretches | Alleppey weekends | Travel midweek or ask for a route through Kainakary or Kuttanad side canals |

When to go, season by season
| Months | Kerala backwaters | Kashmir lakes |
|---|---|---|
| October to February | Dry, pleasant, busiest around Christmas and New Year | Autumn colour, then cold; some lake edges freeze in deep winter |
| March to May | Sticky afternoons, fewer boats out, AC hours matter | Spring blossom, mild days, a lovely time on the lakes |
| June to September | Monsoon rain, very green, often the lowest rates of the year | Summer peak, busy with holiday crowds |
Festival dates, long weekends and school holidays push demand up everywhere, so book early for those or move your trip by a few days.
Questions travellers ask
For a first trip, which houseboat stay in India makes most sense?
For most first timers, a one night private stay in Alleppey or Kumarakom gives the classic experience: a full afternoon cruise, home style Kerala meals and a quiet night moored on the water. If you are already going to Kashmir, a night or two on Nigeen or Dal Lake is the better choice.
Is a houseboat in India safe for families with small children?
Yes, if you choose a registered boat with railings around the deck and keep children supervised near open edges. Ask for child size life jackets in advance. Kashmir houseboats feel steadier because they never move.
Do Kashmir houseboats cruise like Kerala ones?
No. Houseboats on Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake and the Jhelum stay moored in one place. To get around the lake you take a shikara, which the houseboat owner can usually arrange.
What is a bamboo houseboat?
It usually refers to the traditional Kerala style, where the curved roof is built on a bamboo frame and covered with woven palm or coir matting. The hull underneath is wood, not bamboo.
Can I stay on a houseboat on a lake outside Kerala and Kashmir?
Yes, in a few places. Tarkarli in Maharashtra, Tehri Lake in Uttarakhand, some northern rivers in Goa and the Sundarbans in West Bengal all offer nights on the water, though the boats are simpler and fewer.
How long should a houseboat stay be?
In Kerala a single night satisfies most visitors, since the boat covers a similar circuit each day. In Srinagar two or three nights work well because the houseboat is your base for sightseeing.
