Nigeen lake houseboat stays: the quiet side of Srinagar

A Nigeen lake houseboat gives you the same carved cedar boat, shikara transfers and lake views as Dal, but on a smaller, greener, noticeably calmer lake just north west of it, with far fewer passing boats and vendors. Nigeen, also spelt Nagin, is linked to Dal by a narrow channel, ringed with willows and poplars, and reached from ghats off the road towards Hazratbal.

A Nigeen lake houseboat Srinagar stay is the one we suggest to light sleepers, longer stays and families who want space. The trade off is distance from the Boulevard bustle. Here is how to judge whether that suits you.

  • Trade off

Longer drives to the Boulevard and city centre

Why choose a Nigeen lake houseboat

Dal's front rows face a busy road and a steady stream of shikaras. On Nigeen the soundtrack changes: birds, the slap of a paddle, the odd motorboat. The banks are wooded, the water is more enclosed, and evenings feel private without needing an inner row booking.

The boats themselves are the same tradition, with carved verandahs, cedar panelling and walnut furniture; the interior guide walks through what you will find on board. For the wider picture across Srinagar, the Srinagar houseboat hub covers every lake area.

Finding the lake and getting to your boat

  1. From the airport or city, ask your cab for the Nigeen ghat your houseboat names, not just "Nigeen"; local cabbies navigate by ghat numbers.
  2. Expect a narrow lane to the water at some ghats; parking can be tight and there may be only one way in and out.
  3. Call the houseboat from the ghat so its own boatman collects you.
  4. Ask how to get back after dinner if you go out in the evening, and save the boatman's number.
If you plan evenings in the city centre, budget extra time each way. Nigeen is calm partly because it is a little out of the way.

A slow day on a houseboat in Nigeen Lake

  • Early: kahwa on the verandah while mist lifts off the water.
  • Morning: breakfast, then a shikara through the channel towards Dal, or a cab to the old city.
  • Afternoon: back for a rest; Nigeen afternoons are the quietest hours on any Srinagar lake.
  • Evening: a short ride along the banks as the light goes, then dinner on board.
  • Night: stars are easier to see here than over the Boulevard glow.

For ride routes and how official shikara rates work, see our shikara ride guide.

Who it suits, and who should stay on Dal

Choose Nigeen if you sleep lightly, travel with children who need afternoon naps, stay three nights or more, or simply want to read on a verandah without interruptions. Choose Dal if it is your first and only night in Srinagar, if you want to walk to shops and restaurants, or if you love the busy theatre of the main lake.

Couples often split the stay: one night on Dal for the lights and bustle, then two on Nigeen for rest. Our families, couples and seasons page has more on this.

Nigeen lake houseboat price: what changes the cost

The same things that set the cost on Dal apply here: the boat's category, the season and dates, the room or whole boat, meals and winter heating. Nigeen is not automatically cheaper than Dal. Some travellers find better value for the calm they get; others find deluxe boats here priced just like their Dal neighbours. Compare written quotes, with the ghat number, meal plan and heating stated.

Our Dal Lake price guide has the full checklist, and what each class adds is set out on the deluxe page.

Questions travellers ask

Is Nigeen Lake part of Dal Lake?

It is often described as part of the Dal system, since a narrow channel connects the two. In practice it feels like its own lake, smaller and more enclosed.

Is a houseboat in Nigeen Lake better than Dal Lake?

It is better for quiet and longer stays. Dal is better for a first short visit close to shops and the Boulevard.

How do I reach a Nigeen Lake houseboat in Srinagar?

Take a cab to the Nigeen ghat your houseboat names, off the road towards Hazratbal, and the houseboat's boatman will bring you across by shikara.

Is a Nigeen lake houseboat cheaper?

Not as a rule. The boat's class and your travel dates count for more than which lake it floats on. Ask for full written quotes and compare like with like.

Can I take a shikara from Nigeen to Dal Lake?

Yes, some boatmen take you through the connecting channel to Dal. It is a longer ride, so agree the route and time before you set off.
