Overnight launches in the mangrove delta, with forest permits

A Sundarban houseboat is, in practice, a launch: a two deck wooden or steel boat with small cabins, a shared toilet and an open upper deck, which carries you through the mangrove creeks of the Sundarbans in West Bengal and is sometimes moored for the night instead of returning you to a lodge. Trips start from jetties such as Godkhali, Sonakhali or Dhamakhali, a few hours' drive south east of Kolkata.

It is wildlife country first and comfort second, with forest permits, a licensed guide on board and strict rules about where you may step ashore. This page explains the boats, the permits, the seasons, the road to the jetties and what to ask before paying.

What a Sundarban houseboat really is

Do not picture a Kerala kettuvallam. Most boats here are working launches adapted for visitors: a lower deck with an engine, a kitchen and a few small cabins or a dormitory, and an upper deck with chairs and a canopy for watching the banks. Some operators sell a stay on a boat anchored mid river as a houseboat night; others use the launch by day and put you in a lodge on an inhabited island such as Gosaba, Bali or Pakhiralay at night.

Cabins are simple and space is tight. Some launch nights come with just a mattress and pillow on deck or in a cabin. That suits people who care more about the forest than the room, and it is worth being honest with yourself about which group you are in.

Forest permits and the rules on board

Entering the Sundarban Tiger Reserve needs a forest permit, issued by the forest department, typically at the Sajnekhali office or through the reserve's office at Canning. Most tour operators arrange permits for their guests; you provide identity documents in advance. Foreign nationals need their passport and may need an extra permit, so start early.

  • A licensed forest guide must be on board for trips into the forest areas.
  • You may step off only at the fenced camps and watchtowers open to visitors, such as Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali and Dobanki with its raised canopy walk.
  • Fishing, swimming and littering are not allowed inside the reserve.
  • Rules and fees change; confirm with your operator or the forest office before you travel.
Never ask the boat to stop so you can climb onto a bank for a photo. Tigers live in this forest, crocodiles live in these creeks, and the rule exists for good reason.

A typical two day trip, hour by hour

  • Early morning: leave Kolkata by road for the jetty.
  • Late morning: board the launch, permits checked, welcome tea.
  • Afternoon: cruise the creeks, lunch on board, a stop at a watchtower camp.
  • Evening: boats generally leave the forest channels by dark and moor near an inhabited island; a village walk or a folk performance is common on packages.
  • Night: dinner of rice, dal and river fish or prawns; a quiet night on board or in a lodge.
  • Dawn: the best time for birds and the chance of a sighting, then more creeks and the return to the jetty by afternoon.

Seeing a tiger is rare even on good trips. Kingfishers, crocodiles, monitor lizards, spotted deer and wild boar are far more likely.

Seasons in the delta

Getting to the Sundarbans jetties

  1. From Kolkata, drive about three to four hours to Godkhali, Sonakhali or Dhamakhali; tides and traffic change the timing.
  2. Or take a local train to Canning and continue by road to the jetty.
  3. Most packages include the Kolkata pick up, which is the simplest choice for first timers.
Carry printed copies of the identity documents you sent for the permit, a hat, a light rain jacket and binoculars.

Sundarban houseboat package price: what moves it

We never quote figures. A Sundarban houseboat package price depends on:

  • Private boat for your group or a seat on a shared group launch, which is usually far cheaper per person.
  • AC cabins or non AC, and a bed in a cabin compared with a mattress on deck.
  • A night on the boat or a night in a lodge, and the lodge's standard.
  • Number of nights, and whether the Kolkata pick up is included.
  • Whether permits, guide and boat entry fees are inside the quote.
  • Festival and holiday dates, which fill launches fast.

Six things to settle with the operator

  1. Is the operator registered, and will a licensed forest guide be on board?
  2. Are permits arranged by you, and what documents do you need from us?
  3. Do we sleep on the boat or in a lodge, and what exactly is the bed?
  4. How many guests share the boat and the toilet?
  5. Are life jackets on board for everyone?
  6. What happens to the trip if weather or a closure stops it?

For gentler houseboat nights elsewhere in India, compare Tarkarli, Goa, Tehri Lake or the full backwater cruises of Alleppey.

Questions travellers ask

Is there a houseboat stay in the Sundarbans?

Yes, though it is usually a launch with simple cabins, sometimes moored overnight near an inhabited island. Many packages instead use the boat by day and a lodge at night.

Do I need a permit for a Sundarbans boat trip?

Yes, for the tiger reserve areas. The forest department issues it, and most operators arrange it if you send identity documents in advance.

Which months suit a Sundarban houseboat trip?

October to March is the most comfortable. The reserve closes to tourists for about three months in the monsoon, so check the dates each year.

What affects the Sundarban houseboat package price?

Private or shared boat, AC or non AC cabins, boat or lodge nights, number of nights, and whether permits and the Kolkata pick up are included.

Will I see a tiger from the boat?

Possibly, but it is rare. Birds, crocodiles, deer and monitor lizards are far more likely, and the mangroves are the real reason to go.

Is a Sundarbans launch safe for children?

With care, yes. Keep children on the upper deck with an adult, use life jackets, and choose a trip with a lodge night if they need a proper bed.
