Alleppey houseboat price: what decides it and how to compare quotes

Dates, bedrooms, category, AC hours and meals decide what a boat costs

Season and datesBedroomsCategoryUpdated 30 Oct 2026

Deluxe and premium houseboats side by side in Alleppey showing why the price differs

An Alleppey houseboat price is built from a handful of things you can see and question: your dates, the number of bedrooms, the category of boat, how many hours the AC runs, what goes on the menu, how far the boat travels and whether you have the whole boat or one cabin. Two quotes that look far apart are usually for different boats or different inclusions, not one honest and one cheat.

We do not publish rate lists, because they go stale within a season and every boat differs. What follows will let you read any rate card or tariff with confidence and know whether it is fair.

Season, festivals and the calendar

Demand follows the weather and the school calendar. The cool months bring the most visitors from across India and abroad, and the week from Christmas to New Year is the most expensive of all, often with minimum stay rules. Onam, Diwali and Puja holidays, summer school vacations and the weekend of the snake boat race in August also push rates up.

The monsoon is the opposite. Operators fill boats with offers, and a premium boat can sometimes cost what a deluxe one did in winter. If rain does not bother you, this is where the best value lies; the monsoon guide explains what to expect on board.

Size and category: the two big levers

A one bedroom boat for two is the cheapest way to have a boat to yourselves, and each extra bedroom adds a real jump, not a small top up. Before paying for a bigger boat, check whether your group truly needs another room; children often share. The bedrooms guide matches group sizes to boats.

Category matters almost as much. A deluxe boat covers the basics well, premium adds glass fronted lounges, better bathrooms and longer AC, and luxury adds hotel style finishes. The differences are set out in the category guide and luxury houseboats.

Per person or per boat?

People often search for a houseboat Alleppey price per person, but most boats are hired as a whole: one figure for the boat, its crew and meals for a stated number of guests. Extra adults beyond that number add a per head charge, and young children are often free or charged less. Only sharing boats sell by the person or by the cabin; see sharing houseboats.

To compare a private boat with a sharing cabin fairly, divide the whole boat figure by the number of guests. For a group of four or more, a private two bedroom boat often comes close to sharing on cost per head.

How to get a clear written quote

Send each operator the same short message and ask them to reply with the following, in writing:

  1. The boat's name, category and number of bedrooms.
  2. Private or sharing, and the number of guests the figure covers.
  3. Boarding and checkout times and the boarding point.
  4. Meals included, with the main dishes for each.
  5. AC: which rooms and which hours.
  6. Whether tax is included and what the final figure is.
  7. Charges for extra adults, children, pick up and extra hours.
  8. Advance amount, balance terms and cancellation policy.

Then compare the replies side by side. The lowest figure is only the best deal if the boat and inclusions match. The booking guide covers the papers to check before you pay anything.

Red flags in a houseboat rate

Walk away, or at least slow down, if you see any of these: a rate far below every other quote for the same dates and category; refusal to name the boat; pressure to pay the full amount up front; a quote that says "all inclusive" without listing the meals or AC hours; a request for cash to a personal account through someone you met at the jetty; or photos that do not match the boat on the video call.

An honest operator will happily explain why a figure is what it is. If the explanation changes each time you ask, the final bill may too.

Paying less without a worse trip

  • Go midweek. The same boat often costs less on a Tuesday than a Saturday.
  • Travel in the monsoon or the shoulder weeks just before the winter rush.
  • Pick deluxe with night AC instead of premium if you will spend the day on deck anyway.
  • Choose the right number of bedrooms, not one more just in case.
  • Get to the jetty yourself by auto rather than paying for a long transfer.
  • For a couple on a tight budget, consider a cabin on a sharing boat or a day cruise instead of a night.

Questions travellers ask

Why do Alleppey houseboat rates vary so much?

Because quotes cover different boats, dates and inclusions. Bedrooms, category, AC hours, menu and whether it is a holiday date can each change the figure a lot. Compare like with like before deciding.

Is the houseboat price in Alleppey charged per person?

Usually not. Private boats are priced for the whole boat and a set number of guests, with a charge for extra adults. Only sharing boats sell per person or per cabin.

When is a houseboat in Alleppey cheapest?

Monsoon weekdays are usually the lowest. The year end holidays, festivals and long weekends are the highest, sometimes with minimum stay rules.

Does the Kerala houseboat tariff include food?

On overnight trips, the standard tariff normally includes lunch, tea, dinner and breakfast. Special seafood and soft drinks are often extra, so ask for the menu in writing.

Is there an Alleppey houseboat price list I can trust?

Fixed lists online go out of date quickly and rarely match the boat you get. A written quote for your dates, boat and inclusions is the only figure worth trusting.

Are kuttanad houseboat rates different from Alleppey?

Not really. Kuttanad cruises start from the same Alappuzha jetties, and the same factors apply. Longer routes deep into Kuttanad can cost a little more because of extra fuel and time.
