Short cruises around Kadamakudy, or a day trip south to Alleppey

A small houseboat in Kochi cruising past green Kadamakudy islands, fish ponds and palms in morning light

A houseboat in Kochi usually means a short cruise of a few hours around the Kadamakudy islands or the channels north of the city, because the big overnight fleets are based in Alleppey, roughly an hour and a half to two hours south by road. That makes Kochi good for a quick taste of the backwaters on a busy itinerary, and less good if you want a full night on board.

None of these replaces sleeping on board. If that is what you want, plan an overnight stay in Alleppey instead.

Kadamakudy, the island villages north of the city

Kadamakudy is a group of small islands surrounded by backwater, about half an hour or so from central Kochi depending on traffic. Life here runs on fishing, prawn farming and pokkali rice grown in the brackish fields. Houseboats used here are often smaller than the Alleppey fleet, and many trips include a switch to a canopied shikara for the narrow side channels, which people search as a shikkara houseboat ride.

Go early. By mid morning the light gets harsh and the open stretches feel hot, while sunrise trips catch mist, cormorants and fishermen throwing nets by hand.

Sunrise and sunset on the Kochi backwaters

Sunrise cruises at Kadamakudy are the best thing to do here if you are an early riser. Ask for a pick up before first light; the boat drifts while the sky colours and the islands slowly appear out of the mist. Evening trips are also offered, but check that the boat returns before dark, since operators keep to a cut off much like the one in Alleppey. For more on evening light, see the sunset guide.

Kochi to Alleppey: distance and how to plan it

Alleppey is about 55 km from Kochi city by road and roughly 75 to 85 km from Cochin International Airport, so expect around an hour and a half from the city and up to two hours from the airport, more at rush hour. Houseboats do not run as a regular service between the two; if someone offers a Kochi to Alleppey houseboat, it almost always means a road transfer to a boat waiting in Alleppey.

  1. Set off from Kochi around 9 am so you arrive in Alleppey before the midday boarding.
  2. For a day cruise, return after the boat docks in the late afternoon.
  3. For an overnight stay, book the airport drop for after the morning check out, and allow for traffic.

Read the day cruise guide for the full day option.

Chettuva and other quiet backwaters

Chettuva, in Thrissur district a little south of Guruvayur, has a small backwater with mangroves where a few boats run trips from the Engandiyur side. It makes sense if you are travelling north from Kochi and want a quieter few hours on the water. Further north still, the Nileshwar and Valiyaparamba backwaters offer proper overnight stays with very few other boats.

What changes the cost of a Kochi houseboat tour

Prices are not listed on this site, but quotes vary mostly with these points:

  • Hours on the water and whether lunch or only tea is included.
  • Boat size, and whether a shikara section is added.
  • Pick up from your hotel or the cruise terminal versus meeting at the jetty.
  • Weekends and holiday dates versus quiet weekdays.
  • Private boat versus a seat on a shared tour.

For the same questions on longer Alleppey trips, see the hourly cruise and price factors pages.

Before you book in Kochi

Ask whether the boat is licensed by the Port Department, how many hours are actually spent cruising after the drive, and what the plan is if it rains. Check the official Kerala Tourism pages for current information on backwater destinations. Shikara rides have no AC or toilet, so keep them short with young children or older relatives; more on these smaller boats is on our shikara page.

Small shikaras sit low in the water. Everyone, especially children, should wear a life jacket and stay seated while the boat is moving.

Questions travellers ask

Is there a houseboat in Kochi for an overnight stay?

A few operators offer it, but the choice is small. For a proper overnight stay most people drive to Alleppey or Kumarakom, where the large fleets are.

How far is Alleppey from Kochi airport?

Roughly 75 to 85 km by road, which usually takes around two hours. From Kochi city it is closer, about 55 km.

What is the shikkara houseboat ride in Kadamakudy?

It is a ride in a small canopied boat through the narrow channels between the Kadamakudy islands. Many tours combine it with a short houseboat cruise on the wider water.

Is a sunrise houseboat cruise in Kadamakudy worth it?

Yes, few short trips near Kochi beat it. Mist, birds and fishermen at work make the early start worthwhile.

Can I take a houseboat from Kochi to Alleppey?

Not as a regular service. Most packages include a road transfer to Alleppey, where the boat waits at the jetty.
