Alleppey houseboat rates for 1 day are set mainly by how many bedrooms the boat has, whether you want AC during the day, the category of boat, your dates and what goes into lunch, so the same cruise can cost very differently in December and in July. A day cruise usually runs from late morning to late afternoon with a fresh Kerala lunch cooked on board, and you sleep on land.

This page walks through the day itself, then the things that move the cost, so you can compare quotes properly. We never list prices, because they change by season and by boat; instead you will know exactly what to ask.

How the day cruise unfolds, hour by hour

Timings vary a little by operator, but most day boats follow this rhythm:

  1. Late morning: reach the jetty at Finishing Point or the landing your operator names, meet the crew and get a welcome drink, often tender coconut or juice.
  2. Soon after boarding: the boat pulls out across Punnamada lake while the cook starts lunch at the back.
  3. Early afternoon: the boat turns into narrower canals past paddy fields and village homes. Lunch is served at the table in the lounge, often while the boat is tied up at a quiet bank.
  4. Mid afternoon: slow cruising on wider water, time for a nap or the upper deck.
  5. Late afternoon: tea with pazhampori, the crisp banana fritter, or some other fried bite, then the boat heads back and you step off around the end of the afternoon.

Some boats start later and finish earlier, giving more like four or five hours of real cruising. Ask for the boarding and drop times in the confirmation.

Alleppey houseboat rates for 1 day with food: what lunch covers

When a quote says the day cruise includes food, it normally means a welcome drink, lunch and evening tea with a snack. Lunch is the Kerala meal: red or white rice, sambar, a dry vegetable thoran, avial or a curry, pickle, papadam, curd or buttermilk, and usually fried or curried fish. Vegetarian meals are easy to arrange if you say so in advance.

Things that are often charged separately: karimeen (pearl spot) if you want it fried whole, prawns or crab, extra rounds of soft drinks and bottled water beyond what is provided. Alcohol is not served on board. If seafood matters to you, ask whether it is bought fresh that morning and agree the menu in writing. The food on board guide has the full spread.

If you would otherwise pay for a hotel in Alleppey that night, an overnight boat often works out as the better deal. If you are driving on to Kochi or Varkala the same evening, the day cruise fits neatly. See the overnight stay guide for the timings of a night on board, or hourly cruises if even a day is too long.

Where a day boat can go

Because the boat has to return to its starting jetty, a day cruise stays within a loop. A common one crosses Punnamada lake, enters the canals around Kainakary and the paddy polders of Kuttanad, ties up for lunch, and comes back along a different channel. A longer day may reach the edge of Vembanad lake. Do not expect to reach Kumarakom and come back in a single day cruise; that needs a one way transfer or a night.

Ask the crew to tie up for lunch somewhere away from other boats. The quiet stretches between paddy fields are far more pleasant than eating next to three other generators.

Getting a clear quote for your day trip

Send the same message to two or three registered operators and compare the replies line by line. Ask:

  • Exact boarding time, drop time and boarding point
  • Number of bedrooms and whether the boat is private or shared
  • AC: none, bedroom only, or lounge as well, and for how many hours
  • The lunch menu, including whether fish is included and which kind
  • Whether tax is included in the figure
  • What happens if heavy rain or a strike cuts the trip short
  • Pick up and drop charges, if any
Be wary of a deal offered by a stranger at the jetty for a boat you have not seen. Confirm details in writing and check the boat's registration first. The booking guide explains the checks.

Who a one day cruise suits best

A day cruise suits families with toddlers who nap better at home, elders who want their own bathroom and bed at night, travellers on a tight circuit through Kerala, and anyone uneasy about mosquitoes. It also suits the hottest months, when evenings on the water stay humid. If you want the evening calm and the misty morning, though, only an overnight stay gives you that.

Questions travellers ask

What time does an Alleppey houseboat day cruise start and end?

Most start in the late morning and finish in the late afternoon, giving around five or six hours on board. Some boats run a shorter window. Always get the boarding and drop times in writing.

Are Alappuzha houseboat rates for one day the same all year?

No. Weekdays and the monsoon months are usually the lowest, while weekends, long weekends, Onam and the year end holidays are the highest. The same boat can cost much more on a holiday date.

Is food included in a houseboat day trip in Alleppey?

Usually yes: a welcome drink, lunch and evening tea with a snack. Special seafood, extra soft drinks and pick up are often extra, so check the menu before you pay.

Is a day cruise in a houseboat in Alleppey worth it?

Yes, if time is short or someone in your group prefers to sleep on land. You see the lake, the canals and the paddy fields. You miss the evening mooring and the quiet early morning.

Can we get AC on a day cruise?

Many boats offer AC in a bedroom during the day, and some premium boats have an air conditioned lounge. Daytime AC usually raises the cost, so ask how many hours are included.

How many people can go on a day cruise houseboat?

It depends on the boat. A one bedroom boat suits two to four, while larger boats with open lounges can take bigger groups for the day. Tell the operator your exact headcount so they send a boat with enough seating and life jackets.
