Houseboat picture guide: what each kind looks like

What Kerala and Kashmir houseboats look like outside, inside, from the deck and from above

A good houseboat picture tells you more than any brochure: the shape of the roof shows whether it is a Kerala cruising boat or a Kashmir moored one, the windows show how much of the view you will get from bed, and the deck shows where you will spend the afternoon. Below are six pictures, one for each thing travellers ask to see, with a note on what to look for in each.

Use them to recognise the boat types, and then to read operators' photos with a sharper eye before you book.

  • Shikara

Small canopied boat that ferries guests in Kashmir
  • Aerial view

Narrow strips of land, palms and canals threading through paddy

A Kerala houseboat picture from outside

The shape is unmistakable: a long, low hull of dark wood, a curved roof like an upturned basket, and an open front deck where the driver sits. Older style boats keep the thatch and woven matting visible; newer premium boats may add glass panels or a second storey. When you look at photos, check the roof line. A plain, smooth roof with a flat top usually means an upper deck boat.

The kettuvallam page explains how this shape came from the old rice barges.

Houseboat pictures inside: bedroom and deck

Inside a Kerala houseboat, bedrooms are compact: a double bed, a small wardrobe or shelf, a window on one or both sides, and an attached bathroom. Deluxe boats have wood panels and cane ceilings; luxury boats often have bigger windows, sometimes a full glass wall. The deck or lounge sits at the front, open on the sides, with cane seats and a table for meals.

For room sizes and layouts in more detail, see inside a Kerala houseboat.

Kashmir houseboat pictures: the carved parlour

Kashmir houseboats look nothing like Kerala ones. They are moored, flat roofed and long, with a carved wooden veranda at the front. Inside, the sitting room is the showpiece: walls of carved cedar or walnut, a khatamband ceiling made of small wooden pieces fitted into geometric patterns, thick carpets, and papier mache lamps. In winter a heater or bukhari keeps it warm. The Kashmir interior page goes room by room.

The shikara and the lake around it

On Dal and Nigeen lakes, you reach your houseboat by shikara, a narrow canopied craft of wood with a cushioned seat, paddled from the back with a heart shaped paddle. In photos, shikaras often sit beside the houseboat's steps. The shikara ride page explains rides and what to expect.

Kerala backwaters houseboat aerial view

From above, the backwaters of Alleppey become a puzzle of narrow land strips lined with coconut trees, canals running between them, and wide green paddy blocks of Kuttanad lying lower than the water. Houseboats look like small brown shuttles moving along the channels. Aerial photos are lovely, but remember that flying a drone yourself needs registration and often permission; the photoshoot page explains the rules.

How to read houseboat photos before you book

In the photoWhat to check
Wide angle bedroom shotRooms look bigger than they are; ask for bed size and room width
Sunset on open waterAsk whether the route actually reaches open water before mooring
Glass walled loungeAsk if the AC runs in the lounge, or only in bedrooms at night
Only exterior shotsAsk for recent bathroom and bedroom photos
Photos look very oldAsk when the boat was last refitted
Ask the operator to send a short video of the actual boat you will board, walking through the bedroom and bathroom. Deluxe houseboat Alleppey images on a website may show a different boat in the same fleet.

Taking your own houseboat photos

The best houseboat photos are usually taken from somewhere other than the boat: a bund at the mooring, a passing canoe, or a bridge over a canal. On board, shoot from inside the lounge to frame the canal ahead with the roof edge. For students who need a houseboat image for a project, a clear side view showing the hull and roof is most useful; the drawing guide uses exactly that view.

Questions travellers ask

What does a Kerala houseboat look like?

It has a long wooden hull and a curved roof of bamboo and palm or coir matting, with an open deck at the front. Inside are wood panelled bedrooms with attached bathrooms.

How is a Kashmir houseboat different in pictures?

Kashmir houseboats are flat roofed, moored and richly carved in cedar and walnut, with a veranda at the front. Kerala ones have curved thatched roofs and cruise.

Can I trust houseboat images on booking sites?

Use them as a guide, not a promise. Ask for a recent video of the exact boat, including the bathroom.

Where can I get an aerial view of the Alleppey backwaters?

Aerial photos are taken with drones, which need registration and often permission in India. Many travellers simply buy prints or use licensed photos.

What is the best picture of a houseboat for a school project?

A clear side view showing the hull, the curved roof and the deck works best. It is easy to label and to copy as a drawing.
