An Alleppey houseboat is a converted rice barge with bedrooms, a deck and a small kitchen that carries you slowly across Punnamada lake and the canals of Kuttanad, usually for a day cruise or one night on board. Alleppey (Alappuzha on the signboards and train tickets) has the largest fleet in Kerala, so you get the most choice here, along with the most crowding at the main jetty.
These trips work in every season, for parents, college friends and solo travellers on a sharing boat. This hub gives you the big picture: what the boats are, which trip length fits, when to go, how to judge a boat on the spot, and where each detailed guide lives.

What an Alleppey houseboat actually is
The boats began life as the kettuvallam, the stitched wooden barge that once carried rice and coir between Kuttanad's farms and the port. Builders lashed the anjili (wild jack wood) planks using coir cord in place of nails, sealed the hull with cashew nut shell oil and arched a roof of bamboo poles and plaited palm leaf mats over the top. When road transport took the cargo away, the barges were fitted with bedrooms and turned to tourism.
A typical boat today has one to four bedrooms with attached bathrooms, an open lounge at the front, a dining table, a kitchen at the back where the cook makes your meals, and often an upper deck. Air conditioning in the bedrooms is generally switched on after dinner and off around dawn, since it runs off a generator. The crew is normally a driver, a cook and one more hand who helps with mooring and cleaning. For more on the barge itself, read the kettuvallam story.

Where the boats start: Finishing Point, Punnamada and other jetties
Most boats leave from Finishing Point on Punnamada lake, the jetty area named after the finish line of the Nehru Trophy snake boat race that is held on this lake in August. Hundreds of boats tie up along this stretch, which is why it can feel like a car park on water at noon. A few operators board guests from quieter landings around Kainakary, Pallathuruthy or the edge of Vembanad lake, and resorts on the water often bring the boat to their own jetty.
From the jetty, a standard route crosses Punnamada, slips into the canals that run between paddy fields in Kuttanad, where the farmland lies below sea level behind mud bunds, and comes back out onto wider water. If a quiet start matters to you, ask where boarding happens before you agree to anything.
Day, short ride or overnight: which trip fits
The single biggest decision is how long you stay on board. Here is how the three options compare in practice. If you are unsure, use the trip planner above: type in how many are travelling, the trip type and the month, and it suggests bedrooms, a cruise type and a sample timeline.
| Trip | Typical span | Food | Feels like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short ride | Two to six hours in daylight | Tea and snacks, sometimes nothing | A taster, good for a tight schedule |
| Day cruise | Late morning to late afternoon | Lunch cooked on board, evening tea | The full scenery without the night |
| Overnight | Midday boarding, off the boat after breakfast next day | Lunch, tea, dinner, breakfast | Slow, quiet and the most memorable |
First timers with only one free day usually get the most from the overnight option, because the evening mooring and the misty early morning are the parts people remember. A day cruise is the right call if anyone in your group sleeps badly away from home or worries about mosquitoes.

Alappuzha backwaters through the year
Boats run all year, but the experience changes a lot with the weather.
| Months | Weather on the lake | Crowds and cost |
|---|---|---|
| December to February | Pleasant days, cool evenings, clear skies | Busiest, with holiday weeks booked out early |
| March to May | Sticky heat and airless afternoons | Quieter, AC hours start to matter |
| June to September | Heavy showers, green fields, cool breeze | Usually the lowest rates, boat race in August |
| October and November | Mixed showers then clearing skies | Picking up towards the year end holidays |
Monsoon trips are underrated. The rain comes in bursts, the boat has a roof, and the paddy is at its greenest. Read the rain and monsoon guide before you rule it out.
Best houseboat in Alleppey: judging one in five minutes
No one boat suits everybody, only the right one for your group and budget, and photos online are often of a different boat. When you reach the jetty, spend five minutes on these checks before you settle in:
- Papers: the crew should be able to show the port licence plus the classification paper issued by the tourism department, made out to this very boat.
- Life jackets: enough for everyone, kept where you can reach them, plus life buoys.
- Bathrooms: run the tap and flush once. Water pressure and smell tell you a lot.
- Generator: find out where it sits. A bedroom next to it is a noisy night.
- Railings and deck: important if you have children or older parents.
- The bed: sit on it. Some mattresses are thin and damp.

Honest downsides and what to do about them
Brochures leave these out. None of them should stop you going, but each is easier with a plan.
| Problem | What helps |
|---|---|
| Mosquitoes after dusk | Repellent, full sleeves at dinner, keep bedroom doors shut, ask for a net or a plug in repellent |
| Afternoon heat on the lower deck | Sit on the upper deck or the front lounge where the breeze reaches, carry a hat, drink water |
| Generator noise in the evening | Choose the cabin farthest from the engine room, and pack earplugs |
| Crowded mooring near the jetty | Request a mooring spot along a quieter village stretch, if the route allows |
| Touts at Finishing Point | Arrive with a confirmed booking and a crew phone number |
| Boredom after lunch | A book, cards, a short canoe ride if offered, or simply a nap |
Getting to Alappuzha and the jetty
Alappuzha town has its own railway station on the coastal line, and buses run often from Kochi and Kollam. From Kochi airport the drive is usually around two to three hours depending on traffic. From the station or bus stand, an autorickshaw to Finishing Point takes a short while. Many operators include pick up from the station or a town hotel, so ask about it. Plan to reach the jetty a little before the boarding time; late arrivals eat into the cruise, because the boat still has to moor before dark.
Safety on board
Houseboats are slow and stable, but the water is deep in places and the deck edges are low.
Wear grippy footwear in the rain, since wooden decks get slippery, and keep phones in a pouch when you lean out for photos.

Other backwater bases beyond Alleppey
Alleppey is the busiest base, not the only one. Kumarakom, across Vembanad lake, is quieter and close to a bird sanctuary. Kollam starts the long canal route north along Ashtamudi lake, and Kochi offers shorter cruises around the islands. Compare them in the Kerala houseboats overview or go straight to Kumarakom and Kollam and Ashtamudi.

Questions travellers ask
Is one night on an Alleppey houseboat enough?
For most people, yes. One night covers the cruise, the evening mooring, dinner and a slow morning. A second night mostly repeats the same waters unless you choose a longer route towards Kumarakom or Kollam.
What is the difference between Alappuzha and Alleppey?
They are the same town. Alappuzha is the official Malayalam name, Alleppey is the older English one, and both appear on tickets, maps and booking sites.
How do I pick the best houseboat in Alappuzha?
The best one is registered, clean, sized for your group and honest about what is included. Check the papers, life jackets, bathrooms and generator position before you settle in, and judge it on the boat you will actually board.
Do Alleppey houseboats cruise at night?
No. Boats stop cruising and moor before dark, usually by about 5:30 pm, and start again the next morning. It is a local rule on the lake, and timings can change, so confirm them with your operator.
Is there a hop on hop off houseboat in Alleppey?
No houseboat works that way. Public ferries run on fixed routes through Kuttanad villages, and you can get on and off at stops, which is a cheap way to see the canals.
Can I book a houseboat stay in Alleppey after arriving?
During monsoon weeks and midweek you often can. On long weekends and in the year end holidays, good boats are booked weeks ahead and walk in deals at the jetty are risky.
