Alleppey houseboat in rain on a Kuttanad canal with heavy grey clouds and bright green paddy fields

An Alleppey houseboat rain trip is a lovely one if you like grey skies, bright green paddy and a quiet lake, and a frustrating one if you wanted sunsets and long hours on an open deck. Houseboats run through most of the Alleppey houseboat rainy season; the main risk is a day of very heavy rain or a weather alert that shortens or cancels the cruise.

Monsoon nights in Kuttanad have a charm of their own. The best ones had rain in bursts with clear spells between; the worst had a damp bedroom and a crew who closed every shutter by 3 pm. Here is how to get the first kind.

Quick facts

  • Main rain months

June to September (southwest monsoon), with heavy spells in June and July
  • Second rain spell

October and November bring afternoon thunderstorms
  • Driest months

    December to March
  • Upside

Green fields, quiet water, lower demand, cooler air
  • Downside

Wet decks, dampness, closed side shutters, weather cancellations
  • Pack

Quick dry clothes, slippers with grip, a light rain jacket, a dry bag

What an Alleppey houseboat rain day actually feels like

Kerala houseboat rain rarely falls all day. More often a dark wall of cloud crosses Vembanad, the crew drops the side blinds, rain drums on the thatched roof for twenty minutes, and then the light comes back silver and clean. Ducks reappear, the canals smell of wet earth, and every palm looks freshly painted.

What changes is the deck. On a wet day you spend more time in the covered lounge than out front, and the floor stays slippery. Photos look moody rather than golden. If you can enjoy a cup of tea while watching the rain from a dry seat, the monsoon is a fine time to go.

Kerala houseboat monsoon pros and cons

ProsCons
The greenest the backwaters ever lookSome days are washed out, with little time on deck
Cooler air, so the afternoon is bearable without ACHumidity makes rooms feel damp and linen musty on older boats
Fewer boats, quieter mooringsWeather alerts can shorten or cancel a cruise at short notice
Lower demand, so monsoon dates are often the lowest of the yearOpen decks get wet and slippery; side blinds block the view
Easier to get a good boat at short noticeFewer sunsets; evenings can be grey

Winter versus monsoon: December or September

People often ask me to choose between an Alleppey houseboat in December and one in September. December gives you blue skies, clear sunsets, cool nights and lots of company on the water. September gives you green fields, high water, fewer boats and a calmer jetty, with the odd shower. If your group includes older parents who dislike heat, both work. If you want photographs of orange sunsets, choose winter. If you want calm and space, choose the end of the monsoon.

Dampness, AC and comfort in the rainy season

  • Ask for a newer boat. Older hulls and thatch hold moisture, and the bedroom can smell musty. Newer or well kept boats air rooms between guests.
  • AC dries the air. Even on cool nights, running the AC for a while reduces dampness. Confirm the AC hours; some boats will run it a little longer in the monsoon.
  • Bring your own small towel. Towels on board can stay damp in high humidity.
  • Ask about side blinds. Boats with clear plastic or glass panels let you see out during rain; solid blinds turn the lounge into a box.
Decks and ladders are slippery when wet. Walk barefoot or in grippy slippers, hold the rail, and keep children inside the lounge during showers. Swimming in a swollen monsoon backwater is never a good idea.

Weather alerts, cancellations and refunds

During spells of very heavy rain, the district administration can issue alerts and boats may be told not to cruise. On such days the boat may stay moored all day, which still gives you a night on the water but no route. Before you pay, ask the operator three things: what happens if cruising is stopped, whether you can shift the date, and whether the advance is refundable. Keep the answer in writing. Monsoon bookings are easy to get, so there is no need to pay in full weeks ahead.

The booking guide lists other questions worth asking.

Packing list for a monsoon houseboat stay

  1. A light rain jacket or poncho for walks on the bund.
  2. Quick dry clothes and one warm layer for the evening.
  3. Slippers or sandals with a good grip.
  4. A dry bag or zip pouches for phones and cameras.
  5. Mosquito repellent; insects come out after showers.
  6. Motion sickness tablets if you feel queasy on choppy open water.
  7. A small torch for moving around a dark mooring.

Questions travellers ask

Is the Alleppey houseboat monsoon season a good time to go?

Yes, if you enjoy rain and green scenery. The lake is quieter and demand is lower, but expect wet decks, damp air and the chance of a cruise being cut short by a weather alert.

Do houseboats run during heavy rain in Kerala?

Most days, yes. On days with a heavy rain alert, boats may be asked to stay moored or stop cruising, so ask your operator about their policy before you pay.

Which month suits an Alleppey houseboat best?

For dry weather and sunsets, December to February. For green scenery with fewer crowds, late August and September are a good balance.

Is October a good month for a Kerala houseboat?

October usually has bright mornings and afternoon thunderstorms. Plan to be on deck in the morning and enjoy the storm from the lounge later.

Do I need AC on a monsoon houseboat?

The air is cooler, but AC still helps by drying out the bedroom at night. An AC boat is the safer choice in July and August when humidity is high.

Is a houseboat in Alleppey crowded in December?

December is peak season, and the Christmas and New Year week is the busiest of all. Book well ahead and expect more boats at popular moorings.
