A Nileshwar houseboat takes you onto the Valiyaparamba backwaters in north Kerala, a long stretch of water dotted with small islands where you may see only two or three other boats all day. Boats usually leave from Kottappuram, a few kilometres from Nileshwar town, and the area is roughly 20 to 25 km from Bekal, so it pairs well with a beach and fort holiday.

Why choose a Nileshwar houseboat

The Valiyaparamba backwaters are fed by several rivers, including the Tejaswini, and stretch north towards Kannur district. The water is wide in places and broken by small islands with coconut groves, fishing hamlets and mangrove edges. What makes it special is the silence: no queues of boats, no loudspeakers at jetties, just the engine, birds and the occasional ferry.

Routes and what you see

Most cruises start at Kottappuram and head north through the main channel of Valiyaparamba, circling islands and sometimes stopping where you can walk a short way along a village path. Day cruises cover a loop with lunch; overnight boats moor in a quiet spot and return the next morning. Ask whether the route includes a stop on an island, since this is one of the nicest parts of the trip.

Carry binoculars. The mangrove edges and mudflats here attract herons, kingfishers and brahminy kites, and with so few boats the birds are less shy.

Day cruise or overnight

A day cruise suits most visitors staying near Bekal. An overnight stay is worth it if you want a truly quiet night; with almost no other boats around, the evening is completely still. Boats here also stop cruising before dark, so check the mooring time with your operator just as you would in Alleppey.

  1. Decide day or overnight based on where you are staying.
  2. Confirm the jetty, since Kottappuram is not in the town centre.
  3. Request the menu a day or two ahead; local seafood may need to be ordered a day ahead.
  4. Check the boat's licence and, if it has one, its tourism classification on the Kerala Tourism site.

What sets Nileshwar houseboat rates per person

Sharing boats with per person seats are rare here, so most quotes are for the whole boat. Divide that by your group to get a per person figure. Things that move the quote:

  • Day cruise versus overnight, and the number of bedrooms.
  • AC hours and boat category.
  • Weekends and holiday dates, when the small fleet fills quickly.
  • Seafood and special meal requests.
  • Transfers from Bekal or the railway station.

Our private houseboat page explains why having the boat to yourself changes the maths for small groups.

Combining Bekal and the backwaters

A good plan is a morning at Bekal fort and beach, a short drive to Kottappuram, and an afternoon cruise or overnight on the water. The nearest railway stations are Nileshwar and Kanhangad, with Kasaragod and Kannur further away. From Mangaluru airport the drive is long, so plan the boat for the day after you arrive.

Seasons in north Kerala

October to March brings the most comfortable weather and calm water. April and May are hot and sticky. The monsoon from roughly June to September is heavy on this coast, and some operators reduce trips or stop for spells of bad weather.

With few boats on the water, help is further away if something goes wrong. Choose a licensed boat, check the life jackets before leaving, and do not let anyone swim off the deck.

To compare with the south, read the Kerala houseboat hub and the Kollam page.

Questions travellers ask

Is a houseboat in Nileshwar as good as one in Alleppey?

It is different rather than better or worse. Nileshwar is far quieter with island scenery, while Alleppey has more boats, canals and choice.

Where do Valiyaparamba backwaters houseboats start from?

Most leave from Kottappuram, a few kilometres from Nileshwar town. Confirm the exact jetty with your operator.

How far is the Bekal houseboat jetty from Bekal fort?

Roughly 20 to 25 km depending on the jetty, usually a drive of about half an hour or a little more.

Can I book a Nileshwar houseboat per person?

Rarely. Most boats are rented whole, so ask for the full boat quote and divide it by your group.

When is the best time for a Nileshwar houseboat trip?

October to March has the best weather and calm water. Monsoon months can be rough on this coast.
